A LESBIAN AND GAY PSYCHOTHERAPY PRACTICE
Proyecto Luz presents a free concert celebration
by Ed Magiste
Cleveland-Join Proyecto Luz for the inaugural "Thrive Alive Celebration" on Friday, December 1 from 6 until 9 pm. The
free concert, which acknowledges the challenge of living with HIV, will be held at the Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center, 2226
West 89th Street, Cleveland. Proyecto Luz, and its HIV/AIDS program targeting Latinos and others on Cleveland's west side, is affiliated with the faith-based organization Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center. "Thrive Alive" is supported by Abbott Laboratories, Domino's Pizza, Gi-
ant Eagle and Nueva Luz.
In addiction to acknowledging those who live with HIV and AIDS and remembering those who have died, Proyecto Luz focuses on helping healthy individuals who are most vulnerable, namely the 8,500 youths living in the Cudell and West Boulevard neighborhoods.
Proyecto Luz (Project Light) is using the World AIDS Day celebration to inaugurate its social marketing campaign targeting
young people who are recently sexually active. The campaign is funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and is in collaboration with McFarland and Associates of Washington, D.C., and Maniacal Marketing of Akron.
Although Proyecto Luz is part of a faithbased organization, it realizes that many young people are making the decision to be sexually active. The goal of the campaign is not only to promote abstinence, but to promote safer and wiser sexual choices for youth. The slogan for the campaign, “We believe you were meant for something more," carries the hope that the younger generation will avoid infection and conquer the many challenges they face.
For additional information, contact Rev. Max Rodas, executive ministry director, Pastor Dave Bever, director of youth programs, or Marie Torres, HIV/AIDS prevention education specialist, by calling 216651-8236.
Ed Magiste is the development director of Proyecto Luz.

Volleyball finals are Sunday
Cleveland-Playoffs began last Sunday, November 26, for the North Coast Athletics Volleyball fall season.
The championship finalists, listed below, will play this Sunday, December 3, at Cudell Recreation Center, 1910 West Blvd. at Detroit Ave., from 12 noon until 6 pm. All are invited to watch.
The league is also having a food pantry drive for the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland during the fall season playoffs.
Members and spectators are asked to consider donating non-perishable food items, such as canned vegetables, soups or canned fruit. Six hundred cans of food were collected last Sunday, and the league hopes
GayPeoplesChronicle.com
to bring the number to 1,000 this weekend. Winners will be drawn this Sunday for a raffle that is part of the food drive.
The league is the Cleveland and Akron governing body for LGBT volleyball. It is a social group with over 100 players ranging from recreational to competitive, with divisions for each skill level.
The winter season will begin Sunday, January 7, with games at a new location: Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus, on East 30th Street between Woodland Ave. and Community College Drive.
For more information, see www.NorthCoastAthletics.org or contact league commissioner Todd Saporito at 216905-8005 or vice-commissioner Doug Anderson at 216-440-7411.
